Port Marine Safety Code

The BTA welcomes the relaunched Port Marine Safety Code together with the accompanying Guide to Good Practice.

The relaunched Code was introduced by the Shipping Minister, Paul Clark MP, in London during October and was the work of a small committee, drawn from the ports industry, co-ordinated by the Department for Transport and the Maritime & Coastguard Agency.

The BTA were responsible for the writing of a section in the Guide relating to harbour towage. The importance of towage in enhancing safety in ports is now highlighted by the inclusion of a much enlarged standalone Section 9 in the Guide.

It is now the responsibility of the ports industry to continue to regularly update the Code and Guide, and members are invited to contribute suggestions to the BTA Secretariat where they consider that improvements or changes would enhance the towage section.
